The AI-First Manifesto

Four values for an era when AI finds information and generates insight, and humans supply the judgment, empathy, and validation that cannot be delegated.

The canonical AI-First Manifesto lives at aifirstmanifesto.ai, the movement's open declaration. This page restates it and grounds each value in AI-First Theory, then carries it forward into RACE Programming.

The manifesto

AI-First adopters are uncovering better ways of applying AI and helping others do it. Through this work, AI-First adopters have come to value different things:

Value I
New-Age Human Intelligence over conventional productivity optimization.
Value II
Intuition and Empathy over automated reasoning and optimization.
Value III
Insight Generation Delegated to AI over traditional individual expertise.
Value IV
Humans Validating AI-generated Insights over blind trust in algorithmic results.

That is, while we still value those historical measures of intelligence and productivity, AI-First adopters place even more importance on the new-age of human intelligence.

New-Age Human Intelligence

Three roles humans grow into

In the new era of human intelligence, humans will ultimately delegate fact-finding and actionable insight generation to AI. That changes humans to be:

Strategic
Focusing on context, ethics, and purpose.
Scalable
Leveraging AI to process large data sets.
Ethics-Driven
Maintaining meaning, empathy, and values.

Reading the values

Where the values come from

Each value is grounded in AI-First Theory. Theory describes what changes; the manifesto translates it into orientation: positions to hold, trade-offs to prefer. RACE Programming derives from these values.

New-Age Human Intelligence over conventional productivity optimization

The old goal was to make people more productive at the work they already did. The AI-First goal is different: redraw what human intelligence is for. Optimizing the old tasks misses the shift: the leverage is in moving humans up to context, ethics, and purpose, and letting AI carry the throughput.

Intuition and Empathy over automated reasoning and optimization

Axiom I holds that empathy, intuition, and strategic judgment cannot be verbalized, and what cannot be verbalized cannot be delegated to AI. These are not gaps to automate away; they are where human value concentrates. Automated reasoning is cheap and abundant. Intuition and empathy are the scarce inputs.

Insight Generation Delegated to AI over traditional individual expertise

Axiom I: AI excels at exactly two cognitive functions (finding information and generating actionable insights) with 1000×+ acceleration. Hoarding insight as individual expertise is now the slow path. Delegate generation to AI; spend human time on what to ask and what to trust.

Humans Validating AI-generated Insights over blind trust in algorithmic results

Delegation does not end at generation. It ends at validation. AI produces confident output whether or not it is right. Engineering judgment is expressed through what gets verified: the human stays in the loop as the validator of every insight the machine produces, never the blind consumer of it.

Why a new manifesto

The Agile Manifesto (2001) correctly responded to heavyweight, documentation-driven processes. Its values still hold. But Agile was written for a world where humans were the sole generative agents and code production was the bottleneck.

That world is ending. When AI can find information and generate insight at scale, the scarce inputs become judgment, empathy, and validation: exactly the things AI cannot supply. The AI-First Manifesto does not replace Agile's values; it names the values for the inflection point Agile did not anticipate, in the same declarative format so they are easy to remember, cite, and argue with.

From manifesto to framework

A manifesto articulates values; a framework prescribes behavior. These four values are the bridge between AI-First Theory (the description of what changes) and RACE Programming (the prescription of what to do about it).

Accept the theory, reject a value → a variant framework is possible. Accept the values, reject a RACE Programming prescription → experiment with alternative frameworks that share them. Accept the full stack → RACE Programming is the reference implementation. The stack is vertical (theory → manifesto → framework), and each layer is more prescriptive than the one above.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the AI-First Manifesto?
The AI-First Manifesto is a declaration of four values for working in an era when AI generates insight and humans supply judgment. Its canonical home is aifirstmanifesto.ai. It is the philosophical layer between AI-First Theory (what changes) and RACE Programming (what to do about it).
What are the four values of the AI-First Manifesto?
New-Age Human Intelligence over conventional productivity optimization. Intuition and Empathy over automated reasoning and optimization. Insight Generation Delegated to AI over traditional individual expertise. Humans Validating AI-generated Insights over blind trust in algorithmic results.
How does the AI-First Manifesto relate to the Agile Manifesto?
It follows the same declarative "X over Y" format for memorability and citability, but addresses a different inflection point. The Agile Manifesto (2001) responded to heavyweight waterfall processes. The AI-First Manifesto responds to AI systems that can find information and generate insight at scale, shifting human value to judgment, empathy, and validation.
Who wrote the AI-First Manifesto?
The AI-First Manifesto was authored by Pavel Khodalev, CTO of First Line Software. It is published openly at aifirstmanifesto.ai and developed alongside AI-First Theory and the RACE Programming framework.
